Goleta, CA – As a safety and operational improvement, a roundabout was planned at the intersection of Los Carneros Road and Calle Real in the City of Goleta; this is a major intersection shown in the City’s Bicycle Master Plan. The conversion of this intersection from a 3-way stop controlled intersection into a roundabout intersection improved operations while accommodating bicycle and pedestrian travel by reducing stop delays, elimination of points of potential conflict and reduction in travel speeds.
The Wallace Group team was hired by the City of Goleta to prepare an expedited design for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Los Carneros and Calle Real; the team consisted of Wallace Group civil and transportation, landscape and survey staff and was augmented by Parsons Brinkerhoff and Fugro staff. The team provided expedited traffic analysis using existing information, performed survey and right-of-way engineering, geotechnical analysis and prepared roadway, landscaping and electrical design to deliver the Plans, Specifications and Estimate (PS&E). The project included unique stage construction strategies to maintain traffic through the intersection during construction as well as multiple innovative strategies to use existing drainage and pavement features to reduce construction costs while avoiding costly utility relocations. The Wallace Group landscape design received commendation from both the City Design Review Board and City staff. The planting palette included low water use, yet decorative shrubs and trees configured to maximize aesthetics while respecting traffic sight distance and safety requirements.
Wallace Group managed the design and support work with various City departments, utility and right-of-way stakeholders to successfully deliver in an expedited fashion.
