Santa Maria, CA – The North Commons Improvements represent a significant upgrade to the existing campus infrastructure. This project includes underground improvements and reconstruction of the surface landscape and hardscape for this central campus corridor and open space. The project implemented key infrastructure systems identified in the Facilities and Utilities Master Plan to meet future goals, including a new campus-wide water system, improved flood protection, conversion to voice over internet protocol (VOIP) telecommunications, and pedestrian circulation, lighting, and way finding signage.
Wallace Group provided civil engineering and landscape architecture services for this project. A comprehensive study of the entire commons area was applied to develop a unified vision. Construction of the north and south commons will be phased as consecutive capital improvement projects funded by Bond Measure I, therefore it was imperative to create a unified vision for the entire central core from the outset. The fundamental goals of the Facilities and Utilities Master Plan were incorporated into a detailed design that will help to transform the campus and bring a sense of identity to the main plaza.
