Changing Stripes January 21st, 2019

Have you noticed anything different on some of the new roads lately? Lane lines are gaining weight. Those longitudinal traffic lines separating lanes have historically been 4 inches wide, now they are six inches. Sarah Huffman, PE at Wallace Group explains that Caltrans has started implementing wider stripes for several reasons; such as they improve roadway guidance during poor visibility conditions and will serve the aging driving population. These changes will also benefit the emerging self-driving car market. Navigation for these new vehicles will rely on the marking on California’s 50K miles of roadways and according to Caltrans they aim to have these changes completed in two to three years.
